Brow lamination or brow shaping: which one suits you?
Brow lamination or brow shaping? How each works, how long they last, who they suit and how to choose for your brows, from our Chester Hill brow studio.

Brows frame the face more than almost any other feature. Change them slightly and the whole face looks different: more awake, softer, stronger, more polished. That is why choosing the right brow service matters.
Two of the most popular options are brow shaping and brow lamination. They do different jobs, and many people end up having both. Here is how to decide.
What brow shaping does
Brow shaping removes stray hairs to create a clean, balanced shape. At Velour, our signature brow shaping starts by looking at your face, your natural brow and how you like to wear it. We map the shape before any hair is removed, and nothing is taken away until you are happy with the plan.
Good shaping is not about following a trend. It is about working with your bone structure, the space between your eyes and the way your brows naturally grow. A brow that suits you should look like your own on a very good day.
Shaping suits you if:
- your brows have good density but look untidy
- you want a cleaner, more defined look
- you are growing out over-plucked brows and need guidance
- you want a regular tidy between other treatments
Signature brow shaping is $65, or $95 with a tint.
What brow lamination does
Brow lamination is a treatment that sets and lifts the brow hairs so they look fuller and stay in place. A softening solution relaxes the hairs, they are brushed into the direction you want, and a setting solution holds them there. The result is a brushed-up, fuller look that lasts for weeks.
Lamination does not add hair. It changes the direction and shape of the hair you already have, which can make gaps look smaller and brows look thicker.
Lamination suits you if:
- your brow hairs grow downwards or in different directions
- your brows look thin or patchy but have reasonable hair underneath
- you spend time brushing and gelling brows every morning
- you like a soft, fluffy, brushed-up brow
Brow lamination is $90, or $130 with the signature shape and a tint.

Why many people choose both
Lamination lifts the hairs. Shaping then tidies the outline, and a tint adds depth to fine or light hairs. Together, they give the fullest, most finished result. That is why our most complete brow appointment is lamination with shape and tint.
If you are unsure, start with signature brow shaping. Your therapist can tell you whether your brows would benefit from lamination next time.
When lamination is not the right choice
We may suggest waiting if:
- your brow hairs are very fine, brittle or have been laminated recently
- you have broken skin, a rash or irritation on the brow area
- you use strong vitamin A creams or exfoliating acids near the brows
- you have reacted to hair products or lash and brow treatments before
If you have sensitive skin or allergies, tell us when you book. A small skin test ahead of time is a sensible precaution.
Brows and your culture
Many of our clients grew up in families where brows were shaped young, often with thread or tweezers at home. Some come to us after years of over-plucking and want help growing hair back. Others want a strong, defined brow that suits their features and their makeup style.
There is no single right brow. Our job is to find the version that suits your face and how you live, whether that is a natural brow for everyday or a sharper look for a wedding.
Aftercare for shaping and lamination
After shaping:
- avoid heat, steam and heavy makeup on the area for the rest of the day
- avoid touching or picking at the brow area
After lamination:
- keep brows dry for 24 hours, including steam and sweat
- avoid makeup on the brows for 24 hours
- brush brows into place each morning with a clean spoolie
- use a light oil or brow conditioner after a couple of days to keep hairs soft
Planning around events
For a wedding, engagement or Eid, book lamination about three to seven days before the day. This gives hairs time to settle into a softer finish. Book shaping two to five days before, so any redness has gone. Never try a new brow service for the first time the day before an event.
When to see your GP
If you notice brow hair thinning or falling out in patches, or if the skin around your brows is persistently red, flaky or itchy, see your GP. These can have medical causes that are worth checking.
